Messenger Chat Exporter

Messenger Chat Exporter ("the extension") is a Chrome extension that helps a user save their own Messenger conversation to a local text file. This page explains what data the extension accesses and — just as importantly — what it does not do with it.

Summary

The extension does not collect, store, transmit, sell, or share any data. Everything it does happens locally, inside your own browser, on the Messenger tab you have open.

What the extension accesses

When you click "Ναι" in the popup, the extension's content script reads the text that is already visible in the open Messenger conversation and scrolls the page so older messages load. This is limited to:

• The text content of the conversation currently open in your active tab
• Standard page scroll position and height, used only to detect when older messages have finished loading

The extension does not call any Facebook/Meta API, does not read your account credentials, cookies, or any other Messenger conversation you have not explicitly opened, and does not access any tab other than the one you're using it on.

What happens to that data

• Nothing is sent off your device. The extension makes no network requests of its own and contains no analytics, tracking, or remote server.
• The collected conversation text is turned into a .txt file, which is downloaded directly to your computer through your browser's normal download mechanism.
• If you click "Copy chat", the same text is copied to your system clipboard — a standard browser action initiated by your own click.
• The extension does not use localStorage, cookies, or any remote storage to retain your conversation data. Once the popup is closed, nothing is kept by the extension.

Permissions used

• activeTab — to identify the Messenger tab you want to export and send it a start signal from the popup.
• scripting — to run the capture script on that tab.
• notifications — to show a local browser notification when a capture finishes or stops, entirely on your device. No notification content is sent anywhere.
• Host access to messenger.com and facebook.com — required so the capture script can run on those pages and read the on-screen conversation.

The extension also includes a background service worker. It only reacts to messages sent from the extension's own content script (to show the running indicator on the toolbar icon and the completion notification) — it does not run on a schedule, does not access the network, and does not read or transmit any conversation data itself.

Third parties

The extension does not share data with any third party, advertiser, or analytics provider, because it does not transmit data anywhere in the first place.

Children's privacy

The extension is a general-purpose utility and does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this extension's behavior ever changes to collect or transmit data, this page will be updated first, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect that change.
